Interconnection has become the gating item for new compute. In 2008 the wait was under two years; today it averages roughly five, and large-load requests are surging — one Texas utility reported a 700% single-year jump. Waiting isn’t a strategy. These five moves are.

1. On-site generation co-located with the load

Solar, storage, and kinetic generation built at the site let you energize capacity without waiting on a new grid connection for every megawatt. It’s the most direct way to take the queue off your critical path.

2. An islandable microgrid

A campus microgrid that can run independent of the grid gives you firm capacity and resilience now, and optimizes against demand and time-of-use charges once the grid connection arrives.

3. Storage to firm and bridge

Battery and kinetic storage firm intermittent generation and bridge transitions, letting a smaller grid connection serve a larger load by shaving the peaks the utility would otherwise have to build for.

4. Site where the power already is

Stranded generation, retiring fossil sites, and crypto facilities being converted to AI often have interconnection capacity already in place. Siting against existing power can collapse years off the timeline.

5. Phase the energization

Bring critical load online first with on-site generation, then scale as grid capacity is approved. Phasing converts a single five-year gate into a sequence of shippable milestones.
